Goldie Hawn’s Wrought Iron-Inspired Malibu Mansion

First-time visitors to the Eiffel Tower are surprised when they see this mass of steel curves, scrolls and other delicate ironwork. How could anyone make lace out of steel? French engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel did, earning the title of “magician of iron” after the tower’s 1889 Parisian debut, reports Biography.com.

Eiffel — like blacksmiths and ironworkers centuries before him — knew that, behind its rock-hard exterior, wrought iron could be as beautiful as it was functional.

March 1, 2012 by Joanna

Decorators and celebrities love wrought iron because it makes any space feel timeless and luxurious. There are a variety of architectural styles, from a Mission style house to a Craftsman cottage or Northwoods lodge.

Jeffrey Lubell, founder of True Religion Brand Jeans, says that wrought iron is one of the key design elements used in his Mediterranean style beach home. Lubell currently has the stunning, 3,000-square-foot Manhattan Beach property on the market for $10.5 million, according to Realtor.com.

Among the ways architect Louie Tomaro incorporates decorative wrought iron in the home is with an eye-catching railing that serves as a statement piece on the beautiful curving staircases in the house. The house’s interior railing also emphasizes the curved balcony that overlooks the ocean.

What is Wrought Iron?

July 21, 2011 by Joanna

The town blacksmith was a busy individual in the early 1800’s. Everything from tools and nails to cookware and furniture were constructed in small dark shops by a skilled craftsman. Wrought, which is derived from the meaning “worked metal,” was the iron of choice. In its authentic stage, wrought iron is embedded with slivers of iron silicate known as slag that actually change the chemical properties when heated. The slag gives this metal a grainy look similar to wood, adding to its physical appearance and beauty. Wrought iron was quite popular before the development of steelmaking. It was best known for strength, resistance to corrosion and malleability.

Spring is in the air and your green thumb is probably itching to be outside getting your backyard garden started for the year. But since we’re not quite to the out-like-a-lamb days of March and the lion’s breath is still adding a fearful nip to the air, you might want to think about bringing a touch of garden inside your house to help with the spring fever until that frosty lion’s been defrosted by those April showers that are right around the corner.
