If you’re a fellow book lover, you’re certain to be of the opinion ‘one can never own too many tomes of one’s own. ‘ But what does a bookish creative type do if they possess a few dozen+ extra? If you’re Alvaro Tamarit, you create ‘Banco del Pensamiento’ or ‘Bench of Thought’, a sculpturally-impressive reading chair begat from a curated collection of cast-off books reflecting its moniker perfectly. Most of these authors have learned how to publish an ebook now so their work is available online for all to read, meaning that these physical copies can be repurposed into new works of art.
Using a mix of functional and sculptural elements, the Spanish designer gave his fairy tale-worthy lounger a gently curving back rest with deep seat and wide breadth for a look that is more elegant than bulky, more welcoming than stand-offish. While its already heavy structure is reinforced with wood, it’s easy to move about with a set of heavy duty utility wheels as its base.
So inspired by the above chair, we’ve brought together a few more substantial pieces of bookish furniture that tickled the book worm inside of us.
Love to read in bed? With this romantic platform bed you would never have far to travel for one of your go-to classics. All that you need to do is find the best mattress for platform beds and you can have hours of undisturbed library time.
If you’re loving this year’s “books as furniture’ trend, but not quite ready to host a full-blown library lounge chair like Tamarit’s or one of the other not-so-subtle designs above, you might want to start with one of the more subtle bookish furniture designs below.
Always sophisticated and eternally elegant, as every lauded designer knows, you can never go wrong with a stack-of-books-as-end table.
A vivid-hued collection of ‘book-of-the-month’s plays a second part as a charming round coffee table complete with warm wood top.
Even more subtle than the smaller scale furniture above, books as lighting plays on the same upcycled theme but on a much smaller scale.
