All About Ottomans: Styles & Shapes, Uses & Ideas

September 28, 2014 by Joanna

Today lets explore timeless accent seating in the form of the venerable ottoman. Ottomans can be found in virtually every size, shape and style, making them versatile and useful in seemingly limitless ways. Often described as a piece of furniture with a padded or upholstered seat and no arms, the ottoman can be used as extra seating, a footrest or (today’s favorite) a coffee table. These accent seats normally take on a supporting role in interior design, but can easily become the focal point of a room depending upon color, size and style. We hope you enjoy our little tour of ottoman styles, shapes and uses.

Ottoman Styles & Shapes:

Traditional Ottoman Style

Ottomans can shine in traditional or elegant eclectic spaces. Wide stripes turn this skirted ottoman into a conversation piece.

Style of India

Ottomans know no style limitations. In this India-inspired living room, a massive square ottoman is stunning covered in vibrant color and pattern.

Oval Ottoman

Oval ottomans are a bit out of the ordinary so they can easily become a point of visual interest even in the most appealing spaces. Here sophisticated meets relaxed in this marvelous eclectic living space.

Square Ottoman

Square ottomans come in all sizes and styles. Here a massive woven version adds chic coastal style to a white and blue living room.

Completely charming and totally irresistible, this shapely round ottoman is a brilliant design choice for a sophisticated lady’s office.

Ottoman Uses & Ideas:

Ottomans in the Foyer

The foyer is a great space in which to introduce the beauty and functionality of an ottoman or two. From wrought iron designs with padded seats to fully upholstered squares with interesting shapes, ottomans can bring visual interest to the space just inside the front door.

Mid Century Ottomans

Ottomans and footstools are always appropriate as extra seating. Here a pair of Mid-Century stools shows off both handsome good looks and usefulness as accent seats.

Tufted Upholstered Ottoman

Use a large completely upholstered square to add color to a neutral or black and white living room. This tufted beauty does double duty as a coffee table.

Ottoman in the Bath

An ottoman in the bathroom? What a clever idea! This elegant master bath requires a special ottoman—a stylish version with nailhead-trimmed upholstered seat and exposed wood legs.

Ottoman Ideas

A massive skirted ottoman can turn a walk-in closet into design statement. This golden velvet beauty with tufted top and tailored skirt is a brilliant choice for this gentleman’s closet.

Wrought Iron Ottoman

Pair a wrought iron garden style ottoman with a matching armchair for a fabulous look in a sun room or conservatory. Thick comfortable cushions add a touch of elegance.

Great collection. My favorite is the wrought iron garden chair. I have always appreciated wrought iron and it’s ability to look great in any environment.
